When buying a load cell, most people first think of "capacity" — but capacity is only the first step. Whether a load cell performs well and lasts long depends on matching four core parameters: capacity, accuracy, material and protection rating. This article explains the selection logic and helps you avoid common pitfalls.
1. Capacity: leave a safety margin, never select at the top of the range
If the capacity is too small, the load cell works near its overload limit and its service life is greatly shortened. If it is too large, accuracy is wasted.
The correct approach: actual maximum load ÷ 0.6 ~ 0.7 = load cell capacity.
For example: if your checkweigher has a maximum capacity of 100 kg, you should select a load cell around 150 kg (100 ÷ 0.7 ≈ 143), not exactly 100 kg.
Why leave a margin? Because real-world work involves impact loads — packages dropping, equipment starting and stopping, hopper discharge. The instantaneous impact force can be 1.5 ~ 3 times the static weight. A good load cell can handle 150% safe overload and 300% ultimate overload, but long-term use at the top of the range still accelerates fatigue.
2. Accuracy: C3 is enough, don't be fooled by "high accuracy"
The most common accuracy class for industrial load cells is C3, meaning "3000 divisions".
How to understand it? A load cell's minimum resolution = capacity ÷ 3000.
- A 500 kg C3 load cell has a minimum resolution of about 167 g
- A 100 kg C3 load cell has a minimum resolution of about 33 g
For industrial scenarios such as checkweighers, packing scales, batching systems and reactor weighing, C3 accuracy is completely sufficient. C4 and C5 are intended for laboratory balances and precision metrology — they cost much more and, on industrial equipment, represent "performance overflow and wasted money".
Selection tip: pay attention to the "combined error" indicator. An excellent product can keep it within ±0.02% F.S.
3. Material: alloy steel vs stainless steel, depends on the environment
This is the point many people overlook, yet it most affects service life.
- Alloy steel load cell: cheaper, but relies on surface plating for rust resistance. Once the plating is scratched, it rusts within months in damp, water-washed or acid-alkali environments, and accuracy drifts accordingly.
- Stainless steel load cell: has a chromium oxide passive film on the surface that self-heals even when scratched, giving far stronger corrosion resistance than alloy steel.
A simple rule of thumb:
Will your equipment come into contact with water, steam, disinfectant or acid-alkali materials? If the answer to any of these is "yes", choose stainless steel.
Food workshops washed daily with high-pressure water guns, chemical plants with acid-alkali corrosion, pharmaceutical cleanrooms wiped with alcohol — these scenarios all require stainless steel. Saving a few dozen yuan on material is paid back by replacing the load cell three times a year.
4. Protection rating: IP68 is the real "waterproof"
The most confusing protection ratings are IP65, IP67 and IP68:
- IP65: resists water jets, but cannot be immersed
- IP67: can withstand brief immersion (within 30 minutes)
- IP68: can work submerged in water continuously
Load cells in food and chemical scenarios are often installed next to water tanks, at the bottom of tanks, or even directly blasted by high-pressure water guns. In these conditions, only IP68 can hold up.
One key reminder: for some brands, IP68 is an "option" that costs extra to upgrade; the base version is only IP67 or even IP66. Always ask clearly whether it is "standard or optional" when selecting.
5. Other parameters you can't ignore
- Sensitivity: commonly 2 mV/V, directly determining signal strength and matching with the indicator
- Temperature drift: zero-point and sensitivity temperature effects, determining stability across temperatures
- Insulation resistance: the higher the better; excellent products exceed 5000 MΩ
6. Selection self-check checklist
Before selecting a load cell, ask yourself four questions:
- What is the equipment's maximum weighing capacity? Is there impact load?
- What environment is it used in? Any water, steam or corrosion?
- What accuracy is required? Is C3 enough?
- Is the load cell standard IP68, or does it require a paid upgrade?
Once you have thought through these four questions, most of the load cell selection is done.
